Being a bit of a girly girl, I have a tendency to collect handbags (amongst other things). I have made a couple of handbags, mainly as gifts for family but I’ve been wanting to make a bag for myself that incorporated my love of sewing. I finally found the time to accomplish this and this weekend I finished it. I choose a pattern from a company that I hadn’t tried before Sew Candy sewing patterns as the shape of the bag really appealed to me. I choose two different fabric types, a sewing themed cotton quilting panel purchased from Marshland Fabrics and a sparkly pink vinyl fabric from Sewing Quarter
It took me three days to cut out all the different pattern pieces in the two fabrics and all the different interfacings and linings. Being chronically ill, I have to pace myself and listen to my body so after cutting everything out, I took a couple of days to rest.
Being what I would class as a confident beginner, I do have to admit to finding the pattern confusing at times, although it could be just the way my brain works. I also made some silly mistakes, which, again, I put down to the difficulties I had with understanding the pattern. The bag took me about a week to sew together and complete although I only sew for a couple of hours at a time.
The outcome is; I have a truly unique handbag that I absolutely love and I can’t wait to show it off and start using it (I don’t get out much due to my ill health).
