Sewing rooms??

I’m going to talk about sewing rooms today. Sit back with a cup of tea and enjoy.

Do you have one or do you have a space where you sew? Can you leave your creative “mess” where you left off or do you have to clear everything away, probably at the most crucial seam?

I’m extremely lucky;

1) because I have a totally understanding husband and

2) I have my own sewing room.

My sewing room comes with it’s own story though so I thought I’d share it with you.

I live with my loving husband and three small fur babies (yes, I’m one of those fur baby mamma’s 😁), in our little bungalow in the countryside, my idyl, not necessarily my husband’s idyl (he’s a townie). DH (darling husband) has his own man cave (garage) but we also have a stand alone studio behind said man cave. This studio was my little (not quite so little really) slice of heaven. It is where I first started my crafting journey. Whilst I was working in my studio I found out that it leaked, a little, around the edges, so I had to move everything that I was working on into the middle of the room. This was not ideal as of course water and fabric really do not mix well. I preservered in my studio as I was only handsewing scraps of fabric together so I wasn’t working with anything electrical. Then my sister in law took pity on me and loaned me the use of her late Grandma’s old sewing machine. I knew then that the studio wasn’t going to be my little happy place any longer, at least not until it was repaired.

That was nearly four years ago! Where am I now?

Well, my “sewing room” has been in every single room of my little bungalow, trying to figure out what works best for me and for the way DH and I live.

I started off sharing the guest room, we invested in a Murphy bed to make use of every inch of space, it’s not a tiny room but it is the smallest. I struggled in this room for about a year before the lack of space and good lighting got the better of me.

I just want to quickly explain the layout of my bungalow. As I previously mentioned it is two bedroom, one bathroom, living room, kitchen and what could be classed as a dining room/third bedroom. This, we’ll call it a dining room for now, has sliding patio doors out into the rear garden. We use this room more than our living room as the living room overlooks the front garden/driveway and road. So we have renamed the “dining room” and now class it as our “tv room” as I much prefer to look out over our gorgeous rear garden when relaxing.

Back to my sewing room: DH agreed to forgo the guest room and moved all the furniture from the living room into it (just to store as it is too small a room to use as a living room, our furniture didn’t fit) and turn the living room into my sewing room. This worked so well for me as it is a large room and with two large windows, the lighting was perfect. I only spent a month in here before I missed our living room (the tv room is relatively small and isn’t great when we have visitors). Time for a rethink.

Our master bedroom is quite big, now as nice as it is to have a large bedroom, did we actually need one. After all, it is only used for sleeping in, right 😉. DH again agreed to change rooms but this time he had three rooms to move (I really don’t know how he it did it but he did). I really hope I haven’t lost you at this point.

To end my rather long story:

The master bedroom was moved into the smaller guest room.

The living room was put back into a living room.

My sewing room was moved into the master bedroom, which is now big enough to have a put-you-up bed in, without requiring any moving of my sewing equipment, when we have overnight guests.

I now have a perfect, permanent, sewing room. Will my outdoor studio ever get repaired and will I ever move back out there? That’s a question for another time.

Thanks for reading and sticking with me.

Happy sewing

Myia
